    1. Cozy mysteries for 2016 are off to a fiery start, and SWEET PEPPER HERO is the spark igniting the blaze! While I enjoy every series written by J.J. Cook/Joyce and Jim Lavene, the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mystery series is my very favorite, and hold a special place on my book shelves and in my heart. I wait all year (not very patiently) for the newest Sweet Pepper book by J.J. Cook . . . It is ALWAYS worth the wait! Everything about this series, from the characters and setting, to the incredible [...]

    2. Even though this is the fourth book in the series and I haven’t read the others, it was easy to pick up and could be read as a stand alone book.Someone has kidnapped fire chief Stella’s ghost. Well, Eric’s not technically her ghost. He came with the cabin. Before he passed on, he was once the first fire chief in Sweet Pepper, Tennessee, home of the sweetest, hottest peppers in the world. Stella and Eric became good friends and she’s been searching for him for months. Many of the town fol [...]

    3. I enjoy my visits to Sweet Pepper, Tennessee. Things are heating up there, for Stella Griffin. Eric is still missing and Stella is looking for his badge so she can control him. The moonshine war is starting to begin again. There are two explosions of stills destroying the homes and killing one person. Stella is involved in the arson investigations. With the help of Cindy Reynolds, Stella finds Eric along with three other ghosts who Eric invites to stay in the cabin. Eric also asked a volunteer t [...]

    4. Dollycas’s ThoughtsIs that a beautiful cover or what? Kudos to Mary Ann Lasher and George Long!I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. The authors left us with a cliffhanger at the end of In Hot Water and these characters are some of my all-time favorites. Chief Eric or his ghost is near and dear to my heart because he reminds me so much of my dad. The cliffhanger was resolved but not in a way I ever expected. Pretty dramatic but it had me laughing too.Aside from the cliffhanger, in th [...]

    5. Sweet Pepper Hero is the fourth book in the A Sweet Pepper Mystery series. The book starts out with resident “ghost” Eric Gamlyn, former fire chief still missing. Stella Griffin needs to put the search aside when a moonshine still explodes and Don Rogers ask for her help in investigating the scene. She does find evidence that the still was definitely sabotaged. Before too long, a still in the basement of Paul Tucker blows up with evidence that it was intentional. Stella gets a call, supposedl [...]

    6. Oh brother, I'm so happy to be finished with it his book. While I've enjoyed the books in this series so far, I'm afraid this one will be my last. I can only think of one word to describe it. Ridiculous. There were many times I found myself shaking my head in disbelief like when Stella was on her motorcycle 3 days after sustaining a concussion and broke (not cracked) ribs. And John sneering (the author's word, not mine) which Stella dismissed as showing concern. And the ending was just plain, we [...]

    7. Outstanding!!If you like a good mystery, great characters, and a few ghosts in a story, this is a must read!! I love this series!! Every book builds on the next so I suggest reading them from the beginning. Of course I always like to read a series in order. I love that the story continued from the previous book concerning a certain character. I DON'T like when people tell too much in a review and spoil some of it for others. You'll just have to read it to find out!!! I hope there will be more bo [...]

    9. Sweet Pepper, Tennessee is known for its peppers, its ghosts, and the secrets kept in a small mountain community. When author J.J. Cook thrusts fire chief Stella Griffin into the middle of local whiskey wars in Sweet Pepper Hero, Stella and the reader discover how explosive mountain secrets can become.Stella's already in hot water. The ghost of the previous fire chief, Eric Gamlyn, has been gone for five months. Not only does she miss her resident ghost, she's not really equipped to take over hi [...]

    10. Sweet Pepper Hero by J.J. CookThe Fourth Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade MysteryThings are heating up in Sweet Pepper, Tennessee and it's not from the peppers! Stella and the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade are back and trying to be the best volunteer fire department in the state. Stella has her work cut out for her as she not only has squabbling co-assistant chiefs, a pushy businessman trying to take advantage, recipes to prepare and vet for judging, and a missing ghost! Add to that, it appears the whiskey [...]

    11. It seems like this series just started but this is the fourth book in the series. I always look forward to each new book What I especially like about this series above other series is the relationship between Fire Chief Stella Griffen and the ghost of Eirc Gamlyn who was a past Fire Chief . Stella is living in the cabin that Eric built. A true friendship has developed between the two. I also like that the theme is a volunteer fire department in Sweet Pepper Tennessee which is a different theme f [...]

    12. I took my time enjoying this novel because I want to spend as much time as I can in the Sweet Pepper area. I have a lot of heroes there, both living and dead. All still quite full of life.Fire Chief Stella Griffin has her hands full, being chosen to handle the recipes for the major Sweet Pepper festival. Tougher because her main cook and right hand, the ghost of former fire chief Eric Gamlyn, has been missing for months. She has done a fantastic job of training the volunteer fire brigade but no [...]

    13. This is one of my favorite series and this was no exception. Stella is the fire chief of Sweet pepper. This book starts out with Stella's ghost, Eric, being missing. Stella, along with her dog , hero, are miserable without him. On top of Eric being missing, there are mysterious fires in the town. Someone is setting whiskey stills on fire and resulting in a death in the process. Stella is determined to find Eric and figure out who is responsible for the fires.I love this series for so many reason [...]

    14. I love this series. Stella is such a great main character that it is very hard not to fall in love with everything about her and the friends she brings to us. Once again Stella finds herself deep in the middle of a murder mystery and is looking for a way not to get burned herself. A great all around read.On another note, It was very hard for me to finish this book knowing that both Joyce and Jim Lavene are no longer with us and that I don't know if this will be the last I see of their amazing wr [...]

    15. Ghosts And MoonshineI enjoy my visits to Sweet Pepper, Tennessee. Things are heating up there. for Stella Griffin. Eric is still missing and Stella is looking for his badge so she can control him. The moonshine war is starting to begin again. There are two explosions of stills destroying the homes and killing one person. Stella is involved in the arson investigations. 16. Some mysteries are so good that when they are released you drop everything to read them. For me this is one of those mysteries.I love visiting with Chief Stella and the fire house in Tennessee. It is always a welcoming place and the characters are friendly and make this story one you will want to be involved in.With the recipe judging contest going on and not knowing where Eric went off to and trying to make peace Stella has a lot on her plate. When the moonshine distillery explodes from arson s [...]

    17. I love this series set in the mountains of Tennessee. The characters are close and a lot of fun, and the star of the show, Hero the Dalmatian fire dog, is just adorable. As the fourth book in the series, the characters continue to have surprises and secrets to share with the readers. I love the strong female lead character of Stella - she's a gal I'd like to be friends with! First time readers can get a feel for the series with this book, and hopefully will want to go back and read the first thr [...]

    18. Chief Eric Gamlyn the cabins resident ghost is still missing and Stella is missing her friend. With stills exploding a whiskey war seems to be going on. Stella has to investigate whether these are accidental or sabotage Stella could use Eric's help.Cindy Reynolds a Sweet Pepper resident who sees ghosts lets Walt know she has seen Eric. So with the help of Walt and Tagger, Stella looks for Eric. One of my favorite series, with a strong smart female lead. Always enjoy my time spent in Sweet Pepper, [...]

    19. Enjoyed Sweet Pepper Hero, book four of the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade series by J. J. Cook, very much! I bought the Kindle version of Sweet Pepper Hero as soon as I had finished book three, In Hot Water, because I just HAD to know how the disappearance of Eric was going to be resolved! An intriguing mystery surrounding the explosions of some moonshine stills in the area keep the reader guessing until the very end! I am definitely looking forward to book five!

    20. I may have remarked before that I LOVE this series. This one was no exception and I really enjoyed this mystery dealing with "moonshine wars". Eric Gamlyn, the ghost, is one of my very favorite characters and he was a major player yet again. With the passing of Joyce Lavene I'm wondering if there will be more of these. I hope so! Recommend!

    21. Even though this book wasn't as good as the first two, I still give it a 5 rating. I read out of order, missed the 3rd in the series, so some of it was confusing. I love most of the characters, but I'm with the town, I don't like any of the Carson family. I wish Eric could somehow come back to life so he and Stella could be a couple.

    22. Often I find myself thinking that the characters in this series couldn't possible talk they way the book reads. I get a little frustrated that the speech doesn't sound like real people. But, then I keep on reading because the story is good. I still enjoyed it.

    23. This was a tough read. It was hard to follow and didn't really pick up until the last third of the book. The story, whilst plausible, doesn't seem too likely.

    24. Sweet Pepper Hero is the fourth book in the A Sweet Pepper Mystery series by J.J. Cook. Even though this is the fourth book in the series this book can easily read as a stand-alone novel. This is my second enjoyable visit to Sweet Pepper, Tennessee and I will be going back to read the other books in the series. I often select cozy mysteries by theme and Sweet Pepper Hero has at many that draw me to them: a fire brigade, cooking with recipes, Dalmatians (with independent roles), well developed, c [...]

    25. Fire chief Stella Griffin has her work cut out for her in the fourth installment of the “Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade” series. First, she’s in charge of judging Sweet Pepper’s annual recipe contest. The problem is… she doesn’t cook. The real cook in her house is former fire chief Eric Gamlyn, but not only has he been dead for thirty years and living with Stella as a resident ghost, he’s now gone missing. Stella is determined to find him, but it’s not easy since only a couple of othe [...]

    27. FTC Disclosure: I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Sweet Pepper Hero is the fourth book in the series, but easily read as stand a lone read. The mystery is a true page turner that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat until the end. And while I chose to read a cozy because of the mystery, it's the characters that keep me coming back. The Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade series has been on my TBR list for some time. I'm not sure why I hadn't gotten to it before [...]

    28. I really enjoyed this cozy! It was my first trip to Sweet Pepper Tennessee, even though this is book 4 in the series. There was plenty of explanation along the way regarding people and places, so I didn’t feel at all lost jumping in at this point. In this story, Stella has to find her kidnapped ghost friend, Eric, and investigate a string of illegal still explosions and fires. There are an abundance of suspects, some within the police department itself, and as she gets too close to the truth, S [...]
